Kyoto’s historic Nijo Castle is getting an after-dark transformation this autumn. From 23 October to 5 December 2026, NAKED meets Nijo-jo Castle 2026 brings digital art, light, sound and Japanese design into a UNESCO World Heritage setting. If you are planning an evening in Kyoto, here is how to decide whether to go—and avoid paying more than necessary.

What makes this Kyoto night experience different?
The 2026 edition marks 400 years since the 1626 imperial visit to Nijo Castle. It interprets early Edo-period aesthetics—including the influence of Tokugawa Masako—through contemporary art rather than presenting only a generic light display.
The announced route includes historic areas such as the Karamon Gate, Ninomaru Garden and inner moat. The organizer advertises Japanese and English audio guides. This is an evening route, not a promise of daytime palace access or admission to every castle building.
This may suit you if you want a seasonal evening experience after daytime sightseeing. Leave space around it rather than treating it as another stop to rush through. For a wider plan, see our Kyoto itinerary for first-time visitors.

The event uses historic castle areas as its setting. Browse the organizer’s real installation information before deciding whether its art and atmosphere appeal to you.
Ticket prices: is the early-bird deal worth it?
| Visit day | Early bird: buy by 22 Oct | Regular: from 23 Oct | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday–Thursday* | ¥1,600 | ¥2,000 | ¥400 |
| Friday–Sunday & Japanese public holidays | ¥2,000 | ¥2,400 | ¥400 |
*A Japanese public holiday uses the holiday price even if it falls Monday–Thursday. Rates apply to the visit-day category; the early-bird deadline is a purchase deadline. Prices are published admission rates, not a platform-cheapest claim. Fees and payment currency may affect checkout totals.
2 × ¥2,000 early bird = ¥4,000, versus 2 × ¥2,400 regular = ¥4,800, before any additional ticketing fees. Adding two elementary-school children adds no event admission charge for the children, provided the entry rules are met.

Early-bird figures are historical comparison rates after 22 October. The date notice above changes after the deadline; use the official seller for current availability.

Bring the family.Check the school category.
Preschool, elementary and junior-high students enter free under the official rules. Plan the evening around your group’s pace and allow room for the return journey.
Children enter free—but check the school category
Preschoolers and elementary/junior-high school students enter free and do not need an event ticket. This is not a blanket “everyone aged 15 or under” rule. Elementary-school children cannot enter alone. The organizer asks groups of junior-high students or younger children to attend with a parent, guardian or responsible adult aged 18 or over.
Proof of age may be requested; junior-high students should bring evidence of enrollment or date of birth. Check the official notes if your child’s school category is unclear.
¥500 cashback: Kyoto City residents or students
The organizer offers eligible Kyoto City residents or students, of high-school category and above, a ¥500 cashback after admission. Students should bring student identification; residents need acceptable proof of current address. This is an on-site refund, not an automatic online price reduction.
Claim during the booth’s opening hours on the day of your visit; no later refund is offered. Do not assume multiple eligibility categories or unrelated third-party promotions can be stacked. Confirm unclear eligibility with the organizer.
Event admission + public transport: compare the whole day
Kyoto City will sell adult event-and-transport bundles from 23 October to 5 December 2026. It states that each bundle is ¥400 below the regular price of its components.
| Visit-day category | Event + Subway 1-Day Pass | Event + Subway & Bus 1-Day Pass |
|---|---|---|
| Monday–Thursday, excluding holidays | ¥2,400 | ¥2,700 |
| Friday–Sunday & public holidays | ¥2,800 | ¥3,100 |
Important: the city’s announced bundles are sold at designated counters, with cash payment only. The notice lists Kyoto Station-area transport information counters and the Shijo and Sanjo Keihan commuter-pass sales offices. Their opening hours vary, so check the city notice before setting out. This is not a generic online Klook transport bundle.
Before 23 October, compare an early-bird event ticket plus only the transport you need. From 23 October, the city bundle may suit a day when you would use that pass anyway. The two ¥400 comparisons use different baselines: do not add them together and claim ¥800 off the same ticket.
The city also explicitly describes the eligible ¥500 on-site cashback for these bundles. Bring the required proof. Check pass coverage, validity and your travel date; do not assume every rail operator or airport trip is included.

Getting there from Kyoto Station
The organizer gives this subway connection from Kyoto Station. Kyoto City Bus 9 or 50 to Nijojo-mae is another listed option. Check current service details and the return journey before leaving. Nijojo-mae and JR Nijo are different stations.
Venue address: 541 Nijojo-cho, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto 604-8301. Use the event’s announced entrance and evening route, rather than assuming daytime access arrangements apply.

Where should you book?
Start with the organizer’s ticket section. It identifies authorized channels and the current ticket categories. Compare the final payable total, visit-day eligibility and cancellation conditions.
The organizer links a Klook product for this event, but we have not verified a matching live checkout price, exclusive discount or affiliate commission eligibility. We therefore use the official ticket-selection page here, with no invented Klook referral URL or discount claim. Do not substitute a daytime Nijo Castle ticket or a different seasonal show.

Make it a Kyoto overnight.
If you want an unhurried evening, consider a Kyoto stay rather than building your night around a return trip. Choose accommodation for your overall itinerary, not an assumed event discount.
